A Universal Decline Law of Classical Novae. Iii. Gq Mus 1983
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a unified model of infrared (IR), optical, ultraviolet (UV), and X-ray light curves for the 1983 outburst of GQ Muscae (Nova Muscae 1983) and estimate its white dwarf (WD) mass. Based on an optically thick wind model of nova outbursts, we model the optical and IR light curves with free-free emission, and the UV 1455 Å and supersoft X-ray light curves with blackbody emission. The best fit model that reproduces simultaneously the IR, optical, UV 1455 Å, and supersoft X-ray observations is a 0.7± 0.05 M⊙ WD for an assumed chemical composition of the envelope, X = 0.35 − 0.55, XCNO = 0.2 − 0.35, and Z = 0.02, by mass weight. The mass lost by the wind is estimated to be ∆Mwind ∼ 2×10M⊙. We provide a new determination of the reddening, E(B −V) = 0.55±0.05, and of the distance, ∼ 5 kpc. Finally, we discuss the strong UV flash that took place on JD 2,445,499 (151 days after the outburst). Subject headings: novae, cataclysmic variables — stars: individual (GQ Muscae) — stars: mass loss — ultraviolet: stars — white dwarfs — X-rays: binaries

The Reanalysis of the ROSAT Data of GQ Mus (1983) Using White Dwarf Atmosphere Emission Models
The analyses of X-ray emission from classical novae during the outburst stage have shown that the soft X-ray emission below 1 keV, which is thought to originate from the photosphere of the white dwarf, is inconsistent with the simple blackbody model of emission. Thus, ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) archival data of the classical novae GQ Mus 1983 (GQ Mus) have been reanaly...
متن کاملUniversal Decline Law of Novae
Optical and infrared light-curves of classical novae are approximately homologous among various white dwarf (WD) masses and chemical compositions when free-free emission from optically thin ejecta is spherical and dominates the continuum flux of novae. Such a homologous template light-curve is called “a universal decline law.” Various nova light-curves are approximately reproduced from this uni...
متن کاملA Universal Decline Law of Classical Novae. Iv. V838 Her (1991): a Very Massive White Dwarf
We present a unified model of optical and ultraviolet (UV) light curves for one of the fastest classical novae, V838 Herculis (Nova Herculis 1991), and estimate its white dwarf (WD) mass. Based on an optically thick wind theory of nova outbursts, we model the optical light curves with free-free emission and the UV 1455 Å light curves with blackbody emission. Our models of 1.35 ± 0.02 M⊙ WD repr...
متن کاملOptically Thick Winds from Degenerate Dwarfs. I. Classical Nova of Populations I and II
Twenty six sequences of optically thick wind solutions have calculated which mimic time-dependent evolution of classical novae of populations I and II. The peak of the new opacity around log T = 5:2 due to iron lines is found to be strong enough to accelerate the winds even in very low iron abundance such as Z=0.001 for massive white dwarfs ( 0:8M ). The old population novae show the slow light...
متن کاملA universal decline law of classical novae
We calculate many different nova light curves for a variety of white dwarf masses and chemical compositions, with the assumption that free-free emission from optically thin ejecta dominates the continuum flux. We show that all these light curves are homologous and a universal law can be derived by introducing a “time scaling factor.” The template light curve for the universal law has a slope of...
